ACT UP received a fax on February 16 from the mayor's office showing the increase

in funding to the Cleveland AIDS budget for 1994:

As you can see, all sources of funds not related to city revenue are clearly marked. We assumed that the $125,000 under block grant funding was being provided from the city's general fund. However, we discovered that this money will be provided by federal funds upon the arrival of the city's application for these grants. The actual increase in the AIDS

growing epidemic. An increase in funding will go a long way to easing the hardship we face trying to provide for the AIDS/HIV community. Are you listening Mayor White? City Council? What else can our community do to fill the plates until the city

is $25,000. The CLEVELAND $125,000 was a smoke

screen meant to confuse and defuse ACT UP. It almost worked. The important thing is we caught it before it was too late. Is this amount acceptable? Absolutely not.

Food emergency

No argument, people need food. There is a terrible shortage at all area food banks. However, we have to help our own people first. Charity begins at home.

ACT UP will be having a continuous food drive for the AIDS Housing Council. If you can't do anything else, please drop off a can of food at our workspace so we can pass it along to those in need. If you can't make it to our workspace, call the AIDS Housing Council at 651-6400 and ask for Denis Weber. The long-term goal is to open another AIDS hospice. This need for food is going to increase and our community needs to develop an on-going program to collect and distribute food. This is a basic need that we must meet. Until more support funding is available from the city, we have an obligation to fill it. Please help if you can. Grassroots organizations cannot continue to foot the bill and carry the burden in this

Social Security workshop

Marcos Rivero and Gordon Jones of ACT UP will be conducting a workshop

on Wednesday, March 16, on filling out Social Security and SSI applications and how to work through the SS system. There will be two sessions: the day session will be from noon to 2 pm. The evening session will be from 6 to 8 pm.

This is a first in an ongoing series of ACT UP Treatment and Data seminars designed to help those living with AIDS live a little easier. Seating for this seminar is limited. Please call 621-2233 to reserve a seat.

Meeting with Martin Hoke

Joe Carroccio and Marcos Rivero met recently with Rep. Martin Hoke to discuss support for the Cure AIDS Act, HR 3310 in Congress. To our surprise Rep. Hoke said that we were the first two people to walk into his office to discuss AIDS. He was interested in learning more about the problem and we will be setting up another appointment after he has a chance to read the Barbara McClintock Project to Cure AIDS HR 3310. We would suggest that people in the Lakewood area pick up the phone and call 356-2010 and say What About AIDS? Especially the AIDS-challenged community. What are you waiting for?
